2. Examine the Layers panel.

The Layers panel shows the Smart Object thumbnail, with the image name,

08-hat. Very convenient.

3. Save 08-hat as Smart Object.psd in the location of your choice.

When you choose Save As, Photoshop has already suggested the name for you, but adds -1 which is unnecessary in this case.

4. Activate the Info panel and explore the tonality of the image under the hat.

As you move the pointer to different shadow locations, notice that the RGB numbers keep changing. This indicates that there is shadow detail hiding under that hat.

This photo was shot in bright sunlight without a flash, placing the man’s face into total shadow. Using the camera flash when you shoot pictures like this will prevent or minimize this kind of problem, but fortunately, you can correct it after the fact.

NOTE : If you examine images of your own and find that the numbers do not change at all or very slightly, there is no detail in that region, just black pixels, and no adjustment magic can recreate what is simply not there.

5. Lighten the shadows of the 08-hat layer:

a. Before you start, make sure the Histogram panel is visible, so you can observe your adjustments in progress to avoid forcing your shadows or highlights to pure black or

white.

Here is our starting histogram, set to the RGB composite.
